So...

In this game, are there set units you have to buy, or are the starter armies just a suggested force?

Skirmish is the smallest sized game, up to 999 points. This is all we've played so far. Starter sets come in at about 550 points.

In skirmish you only HAVE to have 2 things, 1 armoured unit, and 1 infantry unit.

The starter sets are the best way to start! You get some anti tank stuff, some AA stuff and some infantry, and dropships to deliver it all.

Technically you don't need dropships but stuff moves so slow without them it would be difficult to get anywhere.

Played Wes the other night and its interesting how playing his PHR and Mikes Scourge made for 2 different games.

Like Pete says you have a number of mandatory formations for whatever game size you're playing, but the contents of those formations is fairly fluid. The starter sets are good as they fill out the formations necessary with what the most practical options I think. And yeah, drop ships are VITAL.

I know you take pride in the cheap, but i honestly think all the DZC stuff is really reasonable as far as price. Especially the starter armies

Well I've just found out that the proxy options are actually more expensive tHane even the Resistance stuff. A little research never hurts.

And if I was to buy in to DZC, is anybody's nose going to be put out of joint if I duplicate a force someone else is already doing? The Redistance is just too expensive for me to reconcile and I don't like the Shaltari, so it would be one of the others that I would buy.

I'm returning to one of the original tenets of cheaphammer allowing the army to choose me. I'll end up doing the army that I can get the best deal on.

Why not price up the starter box and an extra rulebook and then split it with Matt then? Pretty sure he was toying with doing UCM, which would leave you with Scourge and a rulebook for around £30-ish? Plus a second set of buildings and templates between us all would be handy...

I spoke to Matt about that and he's more interested in eventually doing Shaltari.

Currently bidding in Scourge from starter set plus rulebook. If I can get it for the same price as a regular starter, I'll be more than happy.

So I've ordered the rulebook and at some point I'll have to get the Reconquest book for my full army list. What points limit are you guys aiming at?

I've got about 1250 at the moment, think Mikes got 1500. Not really aiming for a limit, the games are different the bigger you play. Just going to keep buying and painting stuff, same with any other game!

Yeah, I've got 1500. Treating it as a pool to use different units rather than an army though, as there's lots of things I want to try out.

What list are you using if you don't have the Reconquest Kieron?

The starter came with the stats of the units in the box on a QRS. It's about 550 points. Technically my next purchase should be command but with the main rulebook I'll be able to field some UCM stuff as a Marine Recon Force, which are apparently quite good.

The trouble with buying a command unit is I'll need to get the following all at the same time:
M3 Alexander Command Tank
Lifthawk Dropship
Reconquest Book
Command Cards

It's just quite a big outlay to effectively field just one unit. Technically, I don't actually need the dropship, as the tank can drive on, but it's slow so wouldn't really get into the game. The only other alternatives at the moment are special characters.

I would say buy reconquest and command cards, as you can put your commander in anything, it just halves his sphere of influence (but a pot of cards affect the whole board so dontmpanic too much) and then add the commander once you understand how stuff works.

That is useful to know. I'll do that then at some point.

Adding more units brought up some new rules to try out. Fun game all round!
