Decided I needed a new project so have taken my first steps into the world of Impetus today by ordering myself a 15mm Carthaginian Army!

£45 and I have enough to field the basic army listed on the website.

Not at the moment. Although I have 28mm Carthaginians and Greeks and so can play in a different scale.

I have two elephants...and they're bigger than yours...

Yup.

Would just need to know the base sizes for different units.

Mine will be T-34 elephants though...

All the base sizes for 28mm are on the website as well

Having played it in both scales 15mm is much better game. At 25mm you just hit each other in two big lines, in 15mm it alows for some movment and trying to get flankes etc. 15mm Also alows for shooting and faster troops to have an effect at 25mm it is all combat.

Not arguing the point about which is better. It's just that I have two 28mm armies and no money to start a 15mm army. Having two armies also means nobody has to invest in 28mm to give me a game. Smile

Having said that, small games at 28mm will allow Pete to get to grips with Carthaginians (wot i have) and the rules whilst he gets his painted.

I too have 15mm troops that could be borrowed.
Macedonians.
There is a box of stuff unused too. You could have that for £5. I can't see me adding to my current forces.
Can't see any one's Mrs. baulking at that. Laughing

You're a bad man Bill. Macedonians is where I would go with 15mm.

£5 would be a start and I could work towards the rest I suppose. Go on then... Very Happy

Thanks to Bill's rather humbling generosity, I'm now working on a 15mm Macedonian Impetus army. Long pointy sticks for the win!

In terms of armies...

Looking through the stuff I've got, I can make three different armies (or thereabouts):

Magna Graecia/Thessalia - Medium Cav, Light Cav, 5 Hoplites, 2 Skirmisher
Early Macedonian - Heavy Cav, Medium Cav, Light Cav, 2 Pikes, Hoplites, Peltasts (FL), Skirmishers
Alexandrian Imperial - Heavy Cav, Horse Archers, Light Cav, 2 Pikes, Hoplites, Peltasts, 3 Skirmishers (slightly altered)

Any thoughts on which I should do?

Are they mutually exclusive?
WHether they are or not I should start with the Pikes & Hoplites.
As they are in most of your lists.
For the pikes I did, I attached a single row to the base I was going to use then another row to a bit of balsa that is easy to get off the figure. Easier to paint both sides that way.

As to which is the best army, I have no idea!

Cheers.

I think I'm wondering because in terms of models a Thessalian Hoplite army is easiest to do with the models you gave me and expand with minimal expenditure if I spread them out a bit (there are a lot of hoplites in that box). However, I'm concerned about doing a massive amount of painting to find out that they're dull and one dimensional (which I suspect is the case). However, either Macedonian list will require more significant spending on pikemen (unless I can convert hoplites, which is possible) and Companion cavalry to grow.

In terms of basing, am I right in thinking that when two base depths are listed the larger bases are really just for the slightly larger models to give them space? For example, FP are listed as being either 3 or 4 cm deep, does this mean that most are on 3cm bases but units like pikemen would be on 4cm bases. If this is the case, where do long spears fall in terms of base size?

Cheers

Btw - have decided to do a Syracusan hoplite army. Makes best use of the models I've got and is historically matched to my likely most regular opponents. Should also work as a regular hoplite army too. I also get to call myself a Tyrant!

Also, it's a beta list and so I don't need to buy anything!

I'm going for all my infantry on 4cm, which I think Matt has. Skirmishers on 2cm and cavalry/elephants/tanks on 6cm.

Think there will be more room on 4cm for making the bases a bit more scenic.

So it's just personal choice?

More space isn't necessarily great for tightly packed troops like hoplites. Especially if your a bit of a lazy painter like me!

Matt has 8 or 9 on a base and it doesn't look sparse

Pretty much. Haven't checked what it says on the website, but in the rulebook there's a note that says he's trying to accomodate models that have already been based for other games. The frontage is generally much more important.

In very specific flank charges a deeper base may put you at a slight disadvantage, but its the front of the base that matters even for determining that, so it makes very little difference.

I was in Siracusa last month. Splendid place still. There is still a well running fresh waster just inside the seawall. It got a mention in the Greek classics.
Apparently there were more Greeks living on Sicily in classical times than there were in what is now Greece.
We were following Commissario Montalbano. (See last Sat. Guardian. Apparently we were part of a trend lifting SW Sicily out of financial depression!)
Bill.
I am sure you daughter will love calling you "Tyrant!" just give her time. :-)
