I've stumbled across some campaign rules for ACW and wondered if we could give it a go. It's for the Vicksburg campaign of 1863 and means we could roll out the special rules for Grant and Sherman.

It's played on a larger scale, so each base would represent a brigade rather than a regiment, but fundamentally the game would be the same as the brigades operate as part of divisions in the same way as the regiment/brigade structure we're used to.

The campaign only lasts 8 turns, and not all of those will feature battles. There's an automated system for smaller engagements (we can choose to play them if we wish though), so the whole thing should be over fairly quickly.

If folk are interested, I'll do the work on converting a few bits to BP (it doesn't need much).

What do you think?

For further information the campaign operates not massively unlike the FoW Firestorm campaign (we must finish that), although there is no guarantee of a battle every round. Each turn players alternate (Union first as they're attacking) moving their divisions around the map. There is some free movement if you stay on roads or railways, and you can add extra movement by assigning support dice to individual divisions (dice can also be used to perform special actions like destroying bridges). Each turn also sees a random event from the actual campaign, which include Confederate reinforcements, Union politics and flooded rivers).

When contact is made, battles can only happen if both sides have at least three divisions close to the battlefield and the players want to commit, otherwise it will be a minor skirmish, which doesn't get played. The position of the divisions on the map decides the battlefield and when individual divisions arrive.

During the campaign detailed on the website, there are only two major actions - so unless either side is massively aggressive, it won't take a massive commitment to play, as we could get a lot of the map movement done on one night up until the first major action, and then play that on another night.

Here's an account of the campaign being played by someone else:

This!

Can I tempt folk to dig out their 6mm ACW stuff, maybe during February or March?

It should only involve a couple of actual battles, and a two or three weeks gaming.

I'm keen! But I'm also on your side, so that's not massively helpful...

I'll go through it and print the stuff out, so we can talk about it at the weekend.

Might be a little bit of painting needed, but probably not loads.

But generally yes you do. Get it painted. The next mission from the Black Powder campaign needs it!
