General Matton

Will have to work out how many points I have for VBCW. Probably quite a few (and even more if I finally put that armoured car together...)

Yup.

Assuming you two are still playing FOW I'll bring Panthers and German Infantry too. I'll bring 4 Shermans as well in case Matt needs them.

Just looking at these army lists and I'd reckon that you already have enough go 500 points of British Matt. True you'd need to use your Armoured Car as counts as and your uniforms are not quite right, but with your Artillery (including Trench Mortar as a Light Mortar) and Anti-Tank Rife, I'd bet that a Veteran force would easily be 500 points.

How many men do you actually have?

Just back from my emporium visit. I'm sure they have less and less stuff in each time I go. They only had 5 boxes of plastic bolt action stuff (1 being a panzer iv I managed to resist..) and no metal stuff at all.

They had 4ground buildings but only dead man's hand ones. They had a load of zvezda stuff but unless you wanted a t-26 or panzer you were a bit screwed.

Last moan, but probably the biggest. The plastic space marine commander blister that is £18! Not even failcast, plastic!

Anyway, having read that blog you mentioned last night my planning for my Germans has changed a bit...

Running everything as Regular I can muster 500 points almost exactly of VBCW Royalists for Bolt Action:

HQ + 2 Men with Banner
Medic + 1 Man
10 BUF Rifles with LMG
5 BUF Assault Squad with SMGs
10 Wortley Militia with LMG
Truck
Car
Steam Tank with HMG

Can't see a reason I can't use them against WW2 stuff for the time being.

Received my Armies of Germany book this morning.

Very good on first read. More variety of units and then alternate army composition lists aimed at the different eras of the war and also geographical variants.

Well worth it!

If I've got a gripe from reading the rules, it's that there's no real problem with packing your forces with unhistorical combos, such as flamethrowers in jeeps. So the theatre lists would be interesting to me.

Reading the forums generally people play historically, unless its tournament play. That's why I don't do tournaments!

Suppose it depends who you play against! That's why I don't play my nephew anymore...

Suggested cure for nephew.
You each write a list then the other uses that list on the roll of a 4+ Laughing

We ran a Fantasy tournament at the club where you always played against the list you had written.
There were some awesome, really bad combinations of bad troops and useless magic items. Rolling Eyes

That's a good idea! I'm not sure you can do it as badly with bolt action as you can with fantasy/40k. I'm not going to start another gw related rant though...

You can do it with Bolt Action...pick a French army!

I think that reverse tournament was an idea Paul Lucey and I dreamt up at the Club Challenge.

I'm currently doing some research on how to arrange my Russians, trying to look a little further than the FOW books. My key issue is whether I can genuinely mix SMGs and Rifles freely within a platoon.

We used it to elect club Captain. Unsurprisingly Paul won. To my surprise he had to beat me in the final game:!:
His Dark elves were rubbish. Even worse than my light armoured (Not free reforming) Goblin Wolf Riders without spears I think there were 30 in the one unit:lol:

Back to Bolt Action.
I am giving all my "Free unit" of Russians SMGs. I am painting them up at the moment.
The rules allow you to mix weapons in a unit.
Do you mean was it historically correct?

I don't think you can do that. From what I've read, the language of the special rule states that the unit can have all the options you have models for. But that's all the options available for an inexperienced unit; which would be 1 SMG, 1 LMG, Anti-Tank Grenades and Green.

Multiple SMGs appear to only be available for Regular and Veteran Infantry. Obviously, I haven't seen the Armies of the Soviet Union book, so I may be missing something. Sorry to be a bit of a Jeremiah...

From research (ie quick Google), seems Poindexter is right. Its as an inexperienced squad!

However, SMG toting regulars is fine, so paint away.

Also, I read somewhere that there's an optional rule in the Soviet book that allows you to take a ZIS-3 or a SU-76 instead of the infantry with your opponent's permission. They'd be inexperienced too.

I think it arrived today. However, due to the fact that Royal Mail don't deliver when people are actually in, I have to wait 48 hours before I can collect it from the sorting office down the road.

Why does it take 24 hours to get here, but 48 hours to be taken out of a van and put on a shelf?
