In conversation with Helen, it's clear she's not fussed whether she sees this or not, and given that it's possible some of you might be in the same boat with their other halves, is there any potential in a geek outing to the cinema?

Obviously, if you've already booked, this is a moot point, but I thought I'd raise the possibility.

Yes! But with the house move I'm not sure when! Imax is a must for me too

The only real times in free for this before Christmas are Monday Evening or Christmas Eve. I won't be offended if that's awkward and want to make other arrangements.

Both of those are awkward for me unfortunately.

Do you want to wait until after Christmas then? Or abandon the idea?

...I think I got away with that...

Having had a look through a few screenings in the IMAX over the next few days, I've yet to find one where there's any decent seats left. We might be better waiting till after Christmas anyway.

Do we have anything approaching a plan yet. I'm back from my parents on Monday. Any evening after that is possible, except Saturday.

Further to our conversation, I'll be going on Friday morning. You don't need to worry about me if you still want to plan a group outing.

Not sure yet. I'm going with Helen and Grace, and we're probably looking at 2D.

Friday does look like it has IMAX screenings available. We've gone for quite early, working on the basis that everybody else in the world will be hung over.

Saw it today, if you go to see it, see it in 3d Imax, it looks amazing!

It works in 2D though as well, which is a good sign. It never felt like anything had just been put in for 3D effect (like The Hobbit did). We went to the Showroom on New Years Day and pretty much had the screen to ourselves. I loved that as I generally don't like people... Smile

Without spoilering, you know they've done something right when it's enjoyable for folk our age, and Grace liked it too. That's Star Wars done largely right.

Even Katy enjoyed it!

I know it works in 2d, but the 3d added to it massively for me. The x-wing dogfights looked so good with the extra depth and in general just made the film feel a bit more epic than it could in 2d. One scene with a star destroyer filling the entire Imax screen was awesome!

Unless you only have one eye there is literally no sane reason you wouldn't to watch this in Imax 3D. None. It looked incredible!

The point is that you could read a book with one eye closed, but you don't, because it isn't the best experience you can.have while doing it. It still "works" obviously, but why not enjoy it the best you can?

Even the wife made the point that it's a massive spectacle, in a huge franchise, and there are some things you should just do properly.

Go IMAX!

It is a bit of a pain in the arse if you already wear specs though. Well, not literally the arse. That's not where you wear the specs.

Still very nice, but it gets annoying after a while.

But 'best' is an entirely subjective concept. I'm sure it is good in that format, I've not said it's not, but I enjoyed it in the format I saw it in, and I don't think 3D would have been as good for me for a variety of reasons.

What is clear though, is that this was a successful 3D film as it really enhanced the experience for you guys, but the 3D stuff doesn't undermine the conventional version. When I saw the Hobbit, it was clear that all the silly falling and swinging walkways in the tunnels was obviously included just for 'oooh 3D' impact and actually detracted from the overall film (that bit in 2D is drawn out and stupid). I saw that film in both formats at the cinema, god knows why, and the difference was quite stark.

Star Wars doesn't have that. At no point did I feel that I was missing out on the full enjoyment for not seeing it in 3D - which implies that it's a very well made film.

Are we allowed to discuss the plot yet? Matt, Wes, have you seen it yet?

I've not seen it yet, and Wes has betrayed me and booked a ticket. But, to be fair, I could just stop reading this thread.
