1 RPGing, again on Thu Oct 29, 2015 12:34 am

Right then, settle in, here comes waffle.

Background
As I've noted on the "games we want to play" thread, I want to do some more RPG stuff.

As you are all painfully aware, I'm not exactly cranking out new episodes for the Red Dwarf RPG on a regular basis.

Wes has opined (good word, that) that he's still finding his feet a bit with the RPG business.

I propose to tackle all of these points with the application of Advanced Fighting Fantasy!

What?
Kieron already knows what this is, and I can feel him rolling his eyes as I type, but bear with me.

Advanced Fighting Fantasy is a multiplayer RPG version of the Fighting Fantasy game books. There were three rule books, all of which I got when they were new, in the early 90's. I laid hands on these again last night.

As the name suggests, it's set in a fantasy world - a pretty generic one to be honest. As the name further suggests, it uses the rules from the single-player books (so you have SKILL, STAMINA and LUCK stats), with some extra stuff bolted on the top.

It is still a pretty simple set of rules, so there's not much to figure out in order to play it.

Crucially, there is a short campaign, consisting of four adventures, fully fleshed out in the books.

I can see where this is going, but carry on...
I want to run that short campaign.

Because it's all written, there will be opportunity there to do various roleplaying things, without me having to deliberately come up with something to allow them all (the adventures are meant to introduce the new rules that came in each book).

There are pre-generated characters in (at least) the first book - can't remember if the other books had more characters in them or not. But this means that we could start playing pretty quickly. The characters are pretty standard fantasy archetypes from what I remember - so figuring out their character should also be easy, which I would think is of help to the beginning roleplayer.

Alright, so what are the bad points then?
I'll be honest, the bits of the adventures that I remember are, let's say, "child friendly", so we might find that it's a bit naff. If that's the case, it'll either go a bit daft, which to be honest can be a lot of fun, or there'll be space for more roleplaying in the gaps. Or, it might be a disaster. We'd have to play to find out.

Remember though, I haven't actually read these books for 20 years, so I could be wildly wrong about what they're like.

Kieron has played this before, and I'm sure he's told me he remembers the ending of the first (short) introductory adventure. So he'd have to either sit that out (which would be a shame) or pretend to not know what's coming.

It isn't the best or most balanced RPG system in the world. However, I don't think any of us are likely to be munchkins, so we'd probably get by.

Summary
I'd like to try this out.

I can provide everything - I'd need maybe a couple of weeks to sort printed versions of character sheets and stuff.

It might be crap, but I'm hoping it will be a laugh.

I'm not expecting this to become a huge ongoing thing. If we hate it, I've not really lost anything.

So what do people think? Prepared to try it?

I had those books and they're fun.

However, I know the adventures fairly well as I've run them a few times in other systems. If that's not a problem, then I'm happy enough and won't spoil it, but you might want to mix things up a bit, certainly in the first adventure in the tower.

3 Re: RPGing, again on Thu Oct 29, 2015 1:11 am

I did wonder about a mixup for the first adventure.

To be honest that's the only one I can remember any plot to.

It's up to you - if you're happy to know what's happening (though possibly with some minor changes to try to catch you out) then I don't mind you knowing that.

Just to throw in a crazy idea out of left field, would you be at all interested in GM'ing them instead? Perfectly fine if not.

It's fine. It's mainly the first adventure I remember too, but there's also bits of The Riddling Reaver that would come flooding back to me.

I'd be more interested in running one of my own games, as you'll see in the other thread.

Conveniently, I don't actually have the Riddling Reaver. I'm not fully sure that's actually part of the same system (I know it was multiplayer, but I think it might have been a slightly different thing). We might be ok there.

I have Dungeoneer, Blacksand! and Allansia.

...and I've googled it - yep, the Riddling Reaver is a different thing. So we're ok on that score if that's all that you'd remember.

Dungeoneer is the one I'm most familiar with, and I read Blacksand and Allansia once each, I think, but I don't remember much.

Very good! If you can at least act surprised, I think we're good. Assuming the others want a go.

Following chatting last night, I was wondering if there would be interest in doing a different night for role playing? I'm free pretty much every Tuesday (barring parents evenings) as Helen is out at her choir, but that would mean it being at my house. Obviously, this would be dependent on Tuesday night not being too awkward.

We could run it in an ad hoc basis around when everyone was available, so it probably wouldn't be every week (or even every fortnight), but it would leave regular game nights free for the bigger games that need more space.

What do you think?

I was going to suggest just this last night! I'll probably be the main pain in the arse with this due to my shifts but if we make it a thing (like Halloween weekend) I can start requesting some Tuesdays off.

I also thought this would be good. I wouldn't want to do it every week, but I doubt we could sustain the games that much anyway. I'd be happy for it to move around, doesn't always have to be a Tuesday or whatever for me.

Can we set a start date that's 2-3 weeks from now? That gives me a reasonable deadline to produce the stuff we'll need for the AFF stuff.

Which, by the way, I was wrong about last night - the company that took over the rights, Arion Games, have revised and reprinted these, and there's a whole extra campaign available and! And! They've redone Warlock of Firetop Mountain as a multiplayer quest for this!

http://store.arion-games.com/Advanced_Fighting_Fantasy/cat2182565_1992412.aspx

For now I'd still like to use the original books I have and keep the effort level for me pretty low, but if we do like it, I might be tempted to get more bits later. I'm trying very hard to stop myself getting carried away with this before we've started doing it properly.

One more thing! If possible (and I realise it might not always be due to dog/child issues) we might do well to play at Wes's's's', simply because he has a table that allows a GM to sit at the end.

My reply to this goes for the other thread too, just so.I don't have to write it twice. While both systems do.seem pretty interesting, I can't really devote any other evenings to games, and I'd rather keep to proper wargames than RPGs. That does make things easier for the rest of you though, as there's one less "maybe" for all the weeknight sessions.

That's fair enough. I'm sure you'd be able to 'guest star' from time to time if you wanted to.

Just as a quick point, it will be a couple of weeks before we can do RPG Tuesdays at my house as we've just begun having the kitchen done. After that though, we're good to go.

Starting with Fighting Fantasy.

That sounds fine for me anyway, means I have plenty of time to sort things.

So, RPG Tuesdays are now possible, start at 7:30 at my house.

When are we doing the first one?

Due to mysterious "other commitments", I would like to start on the 9th of February.

I think that enables me to be sufficiently ready, at least for the intro session thing.

Super cool stuff for super cool people? Where's that happening? Because at my house it's nerds pretending to be wizards.
