Right then.
As Wes and Pete are aware, I've finally got round to writing some more for the Red Dwarf RPG. I think I've now figured out a way that I can write sessions for this much more quickly than what I've done in the past, so my hope is that I can have a few possible adventures ready in advance, and add more in response to what happens during play.
As Kieron and I are aware due to painful experience, RPGs work a lot better when everyone knows what to expect from the game and has a clear idea of the tone of the particular setting. I picked Red Dwarf to help with that since we've all seen the series, but I'd still like to ask a couple of things while I'm thinking about the background to future stuff, and I can change it to try to cover what everyone wants.
Obviously, if you don't have much RPG experience you might not have real preferences. That's fine, I just want to try to avoid things that people know they will hate.
So, here we go with questions. I've put my own answers in italics so you can see what I'm asking.
1) Do you want to play the Red Dwarf RPG? It's ok if not everyone wants to play, really I think I need at least twovictims players.
Yes, it'd be weird if I didn't.
2) Would you like the game to focus mainly on combat and pyrotechnics, or on characters and stories? Or would you like an equal mix?
I like there to be a fair bit of story and character in RPGs as that's what they can do that other games can't, but I do want things to occasionally explode. Having the characters struggle to figure out something relatively simple (like how to signal to each other from opposite sides of a wood in the dark) can actually be a lot of fun.
3) How powerful do you want your character to be?
I prefer to have relatively powerless characters, so that it feels like more of an achievement when they accomplish something big.
4) How much danger do you want the characters to be in?
I like characters to have a chance to grow, but also for there to be real risk. I don't like to kill people off left and right (but then it's Red Dwarf, and death doesn't screw your career up like it used to...)
5) Would you prefer a collection of separate episodes or big overarching stories that go on for several sessions?
This'll be hard for me to get exactly right, but I'm thinking separate episodes that are somehow linked together, at least to start with.
