Matt and I have discussed a couple of times doing a 6mm project, just wondered if people had ideas of periods we could do?

What about something in a different kind of landscape to the norm? Like Zulus/British or The Crusades?

Could be a nice change from the usual European like forests and towns.

Don't you have an Impetus army to finish off first?

How about Command Horizon? You know Craig and Kelly are playing it so it would be a good excuse to get them round.

I do have an impetus army to finish off, as do you! The thing thats holding me up is buying some wire cutters to cut the javelins and spears to size....!

I quite fancy doing fantasy in 6mm

Why don't you get hold of one of the Battle of Five Armies box sets? Not sure it's 6mm, might be 10mm. But it means you have rules, two sides and a nicely contained project.

Even though the scale goes against the grain, I started considering 6mm before Triples and think I will be aiming at ACW. I think it needs to be somethingwhere you have many units to get the best benefit of the smaller scale. I haven't made my mind up on the rules as yet, but lean towards BP as Longstreet have some of the Lasalle idiosyncrasies (or so I believe).

There is a small show "the joy of six" in July in Sheffield. I will be going.

So, we went to the show, and we all bought 6mm US Civil War stuff.

I just did a bit of maths, and if we were to play black powder, but use ranges in cm instead of inches, a 3'x2' board would be roughly equivalent to the 8'x6' boards the rules writers use. So we would have space to do some pretty big stuff, if we wanted.

Of course, this all assumes that I don't try to paint the first model and then declare the whole thing to be stupid.

Boom!

Here's a first attempt at some confederate skirmishers.

It's a little tricky to get the hang of painting (these took about 3 hours including drying time), but once I'd decided I wasn't going to be able to do the finer details it was quick enough. They look fine from a distance, which is how they'd normally be viewed but they are quite low detailed.

As an interesting note, I've come across a random army generator for ACW on the Bacchus site. Looks really easy to come up with uneven battles which should alleviate the problem of games getting samey.

It looks easy to convert to Black Powder.

You basically keep rolling for divisions/brigades/regiments until you run out of bases for what you've rolled.

We each bought a pack of American Civil War Infantry (12 stands worth plus Skirmishers). Matt added some command figures and Wes bought a house. If you want to join in you've been encouraged to join the rebellion as General Wes E. Lee is currently outnumbered by the might of the North.

We're using Black Powder rules with a base representing a regiment.

How much did the 12 stands cost?

Link to the models.

Back in Vancouver now so chance of being mauled by bears is minimal I'm afraid...

We bought Bacchus 6mm at the Joy of Six show. We each bought one booster pack for £16.50. It contains enough models for twelve regiments and a bunch of skirmishers, which should be enough infantry for a division.

I'm getting towards the point if adding flags to my first brigade. Warflags have decent (and free) flags available for copying. You'll need to resize them to fit 6mm, but that should be easy enough. I think I'll be using the textured flags.

On the flag issue, it's quite easy for Matt and I to get it right as it's all the same, one Stars and Stripes and one blue eagle flag for each regiment. The confederates are a little trickier and you might need to research individual units if you want to be specific.

The "classic" flags on that site are a bit clipart-y!

Are the versions of the stars and stripes with the stars in a circle from a different time or something?

To be honest, I've looked at the Bacchus ones that they charge for and they seem a bit amateur too. I'm going to try printing some tomorrow so I'll bring them along on Thursday for you to have a look at.

The ones with less stars were apparently done during the war to show only the stars of the states loyal to the union. Given that they were fighting to preserve the union of all the states, that seems a touch counter-intuitive.
